There will be three show times on Sunday, August 20th,
2006 at the Roseland Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan.
Drumming:
The show will open with a performance by multiple
drummers executing acrobatic feats synchronized to the
accompaniment of cymbals and gongs in a percussive
celebration of rhythm. An introduction on Lion and
Dragon Dance tradition will follow.
Lion Dance:
As often seen and enjoyed in Lunar New Year Festivities
around the world, lion dancers will perform acrobatic
stunts upon 3-10 ft. poles representing Plum Blossom
Trees
(梅花樁) .
They will demonstrate three traditional narratives in
which the lion faces different obstacles from
traditional lion dance folklore. The lion dance requires
that the performers express a wide range of emotions
throughout the story: happy, angry, frightened,
doubtful, sad, drunk, sleepy, moved, quiet, etc. The
success of each group in competition depends on the
mastery of both technical execution of gravity-defying
feats, as well as artistry in compelling expression of
each emotion.
Dragon dance:
Ten performers will demonstrate the dragon dance, which
requires strength, speed and precise coordination to
maneuver the body into fluid, intricate movements,
bringing the mythical creature to life.
